Batman VS Superman Review (No Spoilers)

batman vs superman reviewI just got back from watching Batman VS Superman. I had been anxiously awaiting this movie ever since it was first announced a few years ago. After all the waiting, I finally saw it. I got to see two legendary superheroes together in one movie on the big screen. How did it turn out? This is my Batman VS Superman review. Spoiler-free review!

Batman VS Superman Story

Everyone is excited to see how Superman and Batman meet each other and end up fighting, that’s what the previews have hyped us up for. The question is, how do we get to that point in the story?

It is with great disappointment that I say the first half of the movie is extremely slow and doesn’t get to the point fast enough. There are also various sequences throughout that are confusing and don’t do anything to make things clear to the audience.

There was a lot that happened in a short amount of time later in the film. I became worried if everything could be resolved in time by the end of the movie.

Frankly, the plot is all over the place and is busy juggling too many characters with not enough development on anyone. Who is to blame for this? The director, Zack Snyder? Did Warner Bros. put too much pressure on the writers and director to force in other subplots for the upcoming Justice League movie?

The final product is subpar. I’m worried about future movies starring DC characters if they’re going to be just thrown into movies with no care given to their development and interaction.

Superman

batman vs superman henry cavillHenry Cavill is really great at Superman. When he’s in action and when he moves, I feel he is the character. I’d love to see another movie with him as the Man of Steel.

Having said that, I had great expectations for after seeing him get adjusted to being a hero in Man of Steel (2013). I thought some of the questionable decisions made in that film would be smoothed over in this movie.

Unfortunately, there was no time for Superman to breathe and show more of his personality. He can be a great character, but he’s very gloomy compared to any other Superman stories.

Batman

ben affleck batmanI think a lot of people plan to see Batman VS Superman mainly to see Batman in action. Throughout this movie, I was reminded that there were much better interpretations of Batman from Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan.

By the way, Ben Affleck was an amazing Bruce Wayne. I really enjoyed it when he was doing Wayne business on screen. His Batman was all right, but I’ll need at least another movie with Affleck Batman before I make up my mind.

I couldn’t get over the behavior from this Zack Snyder Batman. He’s a horrible detective and way too aggressive. It was obvious he acted rashly and didn’t think things through all the way, even though the film tries to convince you he does. There were about two cool scenes with him, but I wanted more of that and less of the mess we ended up getting.

Batman VS Superman Review – Overall

This movie trips on itself with confusing scenes and tries to cram too many characters into one movie. It’s the same problem that happened with Spiderman 3.

Perhaps younger viewers won’t mind these different incarnations of the DC heroes. For people that can remember older Batman and Superman movies, it might be harder to accept. I can’t see myself wanting to rewatch this even with the supposed “3 hour rated R cut” that will be released later.

DC Comics should have made more stand-alone superhero movies before uniting them together in this one.

My rating: 5/10

Now your turn

  1. Your review seems to line up pretty much with the majority I’ve read. I haven’t seen it yet, and I unfortunately overall didn’t like Man of Steel, although it had good elements. Perhaps with my expectations sufficiently shattered I might actually enjoy this one a little! 😛

    • I think everyone should give it a watch if you’re a fan of either Batman or Superman. Some people will like/hate it more than others, but that’s part of the fun. Everyone is going to interpret the movie differently.

Let me know your thoughts if you end up seeing it! Cheers.

  2. Ha! I just saw the movie the other night and thought, “I wonder what Bryan thought of this.” A friend invited Jorden and I to see it purely for the entertainment, and we all walked away satisfied. I didn’t have any real expectations, which I suppose is a great place to be. I was a bit confused about Batman’s several
murderous rampages (strafing those guys in the trucks with the Batplane?!) But I did like how he was a way more eerie, dark hero, like in his first scene, with the sex trafficker… Felt like a horror movie!

Anyway, always happy to read your thoughts on movies like these. Thanks for the review!

    • It was definitely a movie to watch in the theater. After having some time to digest the movie, I’ve decided that I really want to see a stand-alone Batman movie with Ben Affleck. The scenes of Batman being in his element attacking bad guys was really awesome and one of the best highlights of the movie.

Thanks for dropping by and letting me know your thoughts!

  3. I found that I enjoyed the first part of the movie (pre-fight) more than the boss battle at the end. I also think that Ben Affleck’s Batman is one of the scariest versions that I’ve seen – THIS GUY is someone to be feared.

The dream sequences were a bit much, and I felt like the boss battle was trying too hard to be epic and not hard enough to be understandable.

Overall glad I saw it, but I wouldn’t recommend it to most people.
